We’ve compiled answers to the most common questions regarding Miniature Highlander ownership, our breeding practices, and the process of securing a calf from Cortez Miniature Highlander Cows.
🐄 About the Breed and Care
Q: What is a Miniature Highlander Cow?
A: They are a smaller version of the traditional Scottish Highland cattle, bred for their manageable size, docile temperament, and iconic shaggy appearance. They possess the same hardiness and charming look as their larger cousins but are easier to handle and require less acreage and feed.
Q: Are Miniature Highlanders good for families and children?
A: Yes, absolutely. Miniature Highlanders are renowned for their calm, gentle, and docile nature. When handled regularly from a young age (as ours are), they make wonderful pasture pets and are generally safe to be around for families and children. However, as with any livestock, respect and supervision are always required.
Q: How much land do I need to keep a Miniature Highlander?
A: While needs can vary, a general guideline is at least one acre per two adult Miniature Highlanders. Because they are naturally good foragers, they are often a perfect fit for smaller acreages, hobby farms, and homesteads.
Q: Are they difficult to care for in US climates?
A: No. Due to their dense, double coats, they are incredibly hardy. They thrive in cold northern winters and adapt well to warmer southern summers. They require minimal shelter—often just a three-sided shed for protection from extreme weather—and are excellent, low-maintenance grazers.
